Starter/Plenary
This is an extended starter providing an introduction to Fairtrade using the 'initial stimulus material' approach. Students are to be given 50 cocoa beans or they can draw them on piece of paper. They should then decide how the beans should be divided between six groups of people according to how much money each group should receive from the sale of the chocolate bar. They should be able to justify their decisions. The aim is to demonstrate the inequalities of earnings for the different groups of people. Ideas for further discussion are included in the teaching notes and can be guided after the initial activity.

Compelling stuff if you use real choc. The children knew the way the beans or cash would be divided up would be unfair but were still shocked by the result.
