A card sort activity on the push and pull factors involved in rural-to-urban migration in developing countries.

Students cut out the cards and classify them as either factors causing rural poverty and driving people from rural areas – such as population growth, climate change and lack of employment opportunities – or factors attracting them to urban areas and leading to urban growth – such as better living conditions, job opportunities and health care.

An extract from the urban pull factors:

  • Better-paid jobs. (Factory workers receive about three times the wages of farm workers.)
  • More comfortable houses and a higher quality of life.
  • A better chance of services, e.g. schools, medical treatment, entertainment.
