Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world, with a per capita income of approximately $60 a month, according to the World Bank.

On 25 April 2015, Nepal expereinced a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of between  7.8 and 8.1 on the Richter scale and an intensity of IX on the Mercalli scale. It was the most powerful disaster to strike Nepal since 1934. As of 27 April 2015, more than 4,300 people were believed to have died as a result, with casualties reported in Nepal and adjoining areas of India, China, and Bangladesh.

Students might also consider assisting by mapping relief routes for the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) using open source maps The HOT team are at an early stage of mapping roads into the remote mountainous regions of Nepal, and need substancial help as these roads will be critical in the days ahead, as ground-based rescue and relief efforts work to navigate the rugged terrain.

Here you can find mapping tasks that are currently in progress, select a region, and start tracing routes yourself. This could be a homework/extension activity for the students.
